CJ E&M is aspiring to grow MAMA into an Asian Grammy

Korean entertainment companies look for opportunities in Vietnam and Japan. On November 19, CJ E & M announced that it will hold ‘Mnet Asian Music Awards’ this year in three regions including Vietnam, Japan and Hong Kong from the 25th to the following month. This is the first time MAMA started in 2009 in many areas.

CJ E & M plans to increase the number of MAMA venues from the existing single Hong Kong region to three regions in Vietnam, Japan and Hong Kong to help rebuild the Korean wave. A representative of CJ E & M said, “Hong Kong, which was the venue for MAMA since 2012, was filled with the idea that it would spread the Korean wave because it is mixed with multicultural culture.” The added Vietnam and Japan this year are areas where Korean entertainment are actively targeting.”

In Korea and Vietnam, the recent Korean wave is getting new. JYP Girl Group Twice will appear on NHK’s “Kōhaku Uta Gassen” which is broadcasted at the end of the year. It is only six years since 2011 that Korean singer appeared in ‘Kōhaku Uta Gassen‘. In Vietnam, the ‘2017 Korea Vietnam Friendship Concert’ which was held this month, sold 3,000 seats in three minutes after ticket sales began. Here is why each company decided to feature the strongest lineup in this MAMA. Super Junior will appear in MAMA in five years through Hong Kong stage on the 1st of next month. Super Junior, who resumed their activities in about two years, has been overseas for the first time since the SM Town performance in Japan in July. The SM official said, “A few months after the new core members were discharged from military service, Super Junior has a base of activities as a team. Southeast Asian and Chinese fans will be celebrating Super Junior’s discharge.”

Twice meets MAMA fans at the Yokohama Arena stage on the 29th November. Twice is writing a new history of the Korean girl group in Japan. On the 14th, Twice Japan’s first single “One More Time” received a platinum single certification from the Japan Record Association. It is the first time a Korean girl group has obtained the corresponding certificate for a single album that has sold more than 250,000 copies.

Wanna One will be on stage all the way from Vietnam to Japan and Hong Kong on the 25th. Wanna One, which has exceeded the 101 million album sales volume in 101 days since its debut, is very popular overseas. On November 13, Wanna One’s Chinese fans posted an ad for the 100-day debut in Times Square in the United States. CJ official said, “The intention is to make MAMA a stepping stone to Korean artists as well as Asian artists.” According to CJ, about 50 billion won has been invested in MAMA since 2009, and about 10,000 people visit the site every year. It is expected to attract more than 25,000 spectators this year in three countries.
