The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province plans to file a civil compensation suit against the mother and daughter of a 19-year-old overseas student who traveled to Jeju Island despite the suspected coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
According to Jeju Island on Wednesday, the student and her mother who have been on a five-day trip to Jeju since last Tuesday, were confirmed to be COVID-19.
While studying at a U.S.-based university, she had symptoms of COVID-19, including chills, muscle pain, and sore throat, on the first day of her entrance to South Korea, she carried out her five-day trip. Later, she visited a select medical center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to undergo a diagnosis, and was confirmed COVID-19 on the following day.
When she was confirmed, her mother underwent a coronavirus test on March 25 and was finally confirmed on March 26.
In response, the Jeju provincial government judged that the trip was intentional in that it went ahead with the trip even though it showed symptoms such as visiting a hospital near the accommodation.
