ProgramExplanation
Temple EtiquetteThis includes putting your palms together (habjang & chasu), Main Hall observances, courtesy toward the monks, etc as well as the purpose of living in a temple and the behavior and attitude in carrying out temple activities.
Evening or Early Morning CeremonyYebul is ceremonial service praise to Buddha and also a time where one can reflect upon his or her life. All temple members gather twice a day to partake in this service and make a resolution to follow the ways of Buddha with diligence.
Chamseon (Zen, meditation explanation)Through the "innocent focus and observation" of Seon or Zen Meditation one will get rid of inner anguish and attain truth. This activity involves meditative breathing, sitting posture, and bringing up a topic (Hwadu).
Rosary of 108 BeadsThe 108 Deep Bows has a significant meaning in the temple where you look upon your behavior and language, thoughts and emotions and confess a rebirth to a new self. Also as you deep bow 108 times, the act of inserting each beads one at a time, is a commitment to overcome the 108 passions of earthly existence and live a new life.
Monastic Formal MealDuring the Gongyang meal, one takes on food and eats all that he or she has taken with grateful mind for the food and the grace of the community. This meal is also a time where one can have a time of reflection, reviewing his or her past performance in life.
Meeting with Buddhist MonkThis will be a time where you can meet and have a conversation with a temple monk and ask him questions you have about life. You may ask about things you've never been able to answer and have a time to share your thoughts with the monk. This time will be a milestone of your new life.
