Latest view of life in Seoul, South Korea amid COVID-19 outbreak

seoul COVID-19

It’s already July but the pandemic shows no sign of disappearing. The Coronavirus, which has taken away our daily life, changed the lifestyle of Seoulites.

Korea added 39 more cases of the novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19 in the 24 hours ending Thursday midnight, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s daily situation report. Of them, 27 were locally transmitted and the other 12 imported. Every person is advised to wear a mask when using public transportation such as a subway or bus. Legal sanctions or fines are not imposed, but there are notices everywhere. As the weather gets hotter and hotter, people started to feel uncomfortable wearing masks, these days.

However, Koreans are working hard every single day to overcome the virus without giving in. A wealth sharing campaign has been spreading in Suncheon, a city about 415 kilometers south of Seoul, to support underprivileged citizens hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak, the municipality of Suncheon. The campaign was launched in March at the proposal of Suncheon Mayor Heo Seok, who took a cue from the wealthy people of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), who were praised for practicing noblesse oblige by sharing their possessions with the poor under the so-called “gwonbun” movement(The Korea Herald).

It seems like time is still needed for the world to calm down, but I believe that the future of being able to travel where you want to, when you want, will surely come back soon.
