Nami Island, a major tourist destination in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, has emerged as a popular tourist destination for Filipino tourists.
According to Nami Island, the total number of Filipino tourists visiting Nami Island until August this year totaled 51,909. This is a 67.5 percent increase over the same period last year. In particular, the number of Filipino tourists visiting Nami Island in August was 3343, a 131% increase over the same period last year.
The increase in the number of tourists in the Philippines is due to the recent drama “My Korean Jagiya” in the Philippines. This drama is a collaboration between Korea and the Philippines, filmed in the background of South Korea such as Chuncheon Nami Island and Namsan Tower in Seoul. Filipino women are falling in love with Korean stars, and are now being broadcast on GMA, the largest broadcasting company in the Philippines, with a high audience rating of 12.6%.
Pablo (25), a Filipino tourist who visited Nami Island with his family, said, “I decided to travel to Nami Island because of my favorite TV show ‘My Korean Jagiya‘ I wanted to come to the autumn to see the foliage because there is no autumn in the Philippines.”

Nami Island was introduced to the drama ‘Winter Sonata’ as a background place and received a steady love from foreign tourists. The number of visitors increased by more than 20% every year from 20,000 in 2002 when the drama aired. Last year, 1.3 million people visited from 127 countries.
The provision of tourist convenience to foreigners is also contributing to the increase of foreign tourists. Nami Island offers a tour guide leaflet in seven languages, including Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese, all over the islands around the world. The guide will also take a free story tour to introduce Nami Island in three languages: Chinese, Japanese and English.
Foreign tourists visiting Nami Island have been touring neighboring tourist areas such as Chuncheon Myeongdong, Chicken Ribs Alley, and Skywalk, which is bringing vitality to the local economy.
“I will try to make tourists naturally connect to other tourist destinations through cooperation with neighboring tourist sites such as Kangchun Railway Park and Anime Museum,” said Jeon Myeong-jun, president of Nami Island.
